How do I sign up for Let’s Talk Science?

If you’re interested in becoming a Let’s Talk Science volunteer, email volunteer@ubclts.com.  We’ll let you know more about the program, how to register and when our next training session is being held.  It is mandatory for all volunteers to attend one training session.

Where do I learn about interesting volunteer opportunities?

We keep our volunteers updated on upcoming events and opportunities!  Twice a month, we send emails detailing upcoming volunteer opportunities. You can look through all the available opportunities and sign up for ones that interest you and work with your schedule. Also, we maintain an updated activities calendar on our main website and Facebook account.

Will Let’s Talk Science train me?

Yes! All of our volunteers complete a comprehensive training session before going on classroom visits or participating in community events!  As well, there may be special programs that we run that require extra training. You will be notified if this is the case. As well, volunteers are encouraged to speak with our supplies coordinator and our team for helpful tips on how to pull off a great visit!

Please email volunteer@ubclts.com to find out when and where the next training session is taking place.

Can I do classroom visits with a friend?

Yes.  Some of our volunteers are nervous about visiting classrooms alone.  You are welcome to complete visits in pairs, just let us know.  Also, make sure your schedules are flexible enough to accommodate 2-3 visits, together, during the year.

How is my volunteer participation recognized?

We have a Portal where you log the hours you spend on any Let’s Talk Science program or event. Logging allows us to track all the great work that is being done and who is doing it. At the end of the school year, we issue certificates of participation if you participate in at least one activity throughout the year. Also, we will write letters of reference and act as verifiers if you need them.

On a monthly basis, we select star volunteers and award them with a UBC Bookstore gift card as an appreciation of their great outreach efforts. We also hold volunteer appreciation events throughout the year to recognise all the great work you do!

Can I volunteer if I am an undergraduate student?

Undergraduate students can get involved in our SMaRT and Science Fair Mentorship programs. You will be part of a pod and supervised by a graduate students. It's a great way to get into science outreach! If you are interested, please contact our SMaRT and/or Mentorship coordinators at smart@ubclts.com and mentorship@ubclts.com respectively.

Can I volunteer if I am an international student?

Absolutely! UBC Let's Talk Science is open to all UBC students with a background in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
