Aboriginal Student Outreach

The UBC LTS-PP, as part of its Access Initiative, is trying to expand its reach into Aboriginal communities and schools. This is 100% in line with UBC's current policy as outlined by the December 2007 Letter to the UBC Community from President Stephen J. Toope Where does UBC stand .

So far, UBC LTS-PP has traveled to Port Alberni, helped with the CEDAR Summer Day Camp, and run hands on demonstrations at the First Nations Invitational Soccer Tournament, provided tours of cutting-edge research facilities such as the National Research Council, and helped organizing other community events. Upcoming events, specific to Aboriginal youth are:

1. CEDAR all-year activities

A summer camp (with some cool hands on science in addition to other things!) for Aboriginal Youth entering grades 4, 5, and 6. CEDAR summer camps are running annually in July and August, but we provide scientific programming and science literacy throughout the year. Check it out at:

and take a peek at this year's summer report.

The next activity will be an alternative energy day at the National Research Council Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation, on Sunday, December 2nd, at 10am. Contact Lars on lts at ubclts.com to find out more details. Everybody is welcome, cutting edge science and technology research will be provided :-)

2. MUSQUEAM Summer Camps

We send volunteers to Musqueam First Nation once a week for almost three months during the summer, and try to incorporate them into the all-year activities we provide. Activity ideas are as versatile as the grads that go there.
