The inaugural event took place Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the beautiful UBC Life Sciences Centre and featured some of UBC's finest neuroscientists as judges for the competition.
Professor Adele Diamond, a Canada Research Chair Professor of Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience, says, "Neuroscience is an exciting area of research in which to be involved. Now more than ever, there are opportunities to bridge this area with other disciplines, and the Brain Bee will introduce high school students to these possibilities."
Assistant Professors Kurt Haas and Shernaz Bamji, both Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholars, and Professor Jane Roskams, winner of the 2008 CIHR Synapse Prize for Mentorship, agree that the Brain Bee is a great opportunity to meet researchers involved in brain research and to consider pursuing careers in this exciting and rewarding area of science.
“From looking at how brain cells grow and create connections, to seeing how diseases progress in the brain, there is plenty to see and learn at this event,” say Haas.
“Ultimately, this brings neuroscience research from the lab out into the community," adds Bamji.
High school students in grades 10-12 across the Lower Mainland will now compete annually for their chance to represent Vancouver at the National Brain Bee. The winner of the National Brain Bee represents Canada at the International Brain Bee each year.
